What "IGBC Certified" Actually Means
The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee is a real U.S. government body — wildlife agencies from federal, state, and tribal governments working together on grizzly bear recovery. Their testing program is straightforward but strict: a live grizzly bear gets 60 uninterrupted minutes with a sample trash cart, food inside as the incentive. If the bear can't get in and can't destroy it trying, the trash cart passes and earns a real certification number. If it fails, the manufacturer redesigns and re-tests. Nobody buys their way onto this list.
How to Use the Certification Number
Every certified number and date below was read directly off the IGBC's own published list — not estimated from a marketing claim. Cross-check any quote you receive against our full certified-products database before you buy, especially if your area has a bear ordinance that requires certification specifically — see our state-by-state law guide.
Bear-Proof Garbage Cans, Bins & Containers: What Are These Called?
Shoppers search for the same product under many names. Bear-proof trash cans, bear-proof garbage cans, bear-resistant trash cans, bear-resistant garbage cans, bear-proof bins, bear-proof trash bins, bear-proof garbage bins, bear-proof trashcans (one word), bear-safe garbage cans, bear-proof trash containers, and bear-resistant trash containers all describe one thing: a container with a lid and latch that a bear can't open. Some searches say "animal proof trash cans" or "animal proof bins"; the certification here is a bear test, so see the animal-proof question below. Some people just say "bear cans" or "bear carts." Park and city specifications usually say bear-proof trash receptacles instead.
Whatever the label, the claim worth checking is the same: a certification number for the exact model. If you already own a can and want to secure it, a certified retrofit lock or a bear-proof trash can enclosure may cost less than replacing it. Our guide to the best bear-proof trash cans explains how we picked nine standouts.
What to Check Before You Buy
32 gallon suits most single-family homes; 64–96 gallon suits larger households, infrequent pickup schedules, or anyone consolidating multiple standard cans into one certified unit.
"Semi-automated" carts work with standard arm-lift collection trucks; "fully-automated" models are built for municipal automated-collection fleets. Check with your hauler before ordering if you're on automated pickup.
Some latches are simpler for daily one-handed use (relevant for elderly residents or short-term rentals — see our STR safety guide) while others prioritize maximum resistance over convenience.
"Bear-resistant" on a product listing isn't verifiable on its own — an IGBC or WMI/SEAFWA certification number is. Every number below is checked against the official list for whichever program certified it.
