Every Bear-Proof Brand We Track, Compared Honestly
We checked every real bear-proof brand we track — trash cans, coolers, canisters, and retrofit locks — against the official U.S. bear-testing lists, so you don't have to. 27 manufacturers, 63 certified products total, no made-up scores.
Every brand on this page passed a real live-bear test — not a lab simulation, not a marketing claim. Some were tested against grizzlies, some against black bears, but none of it is a guess.
This page covers everything we track: trash cans, enclosures, and dumpsters tested against grizzly bears (that program is called the IGBC), coolers and backcountry canisters (also on the IGBC's list, but their own separate category), and retrofit locks & covers tested against black bears instead (a program called WMI/SEAFWA). See how the two testing programs relate. Want the company history behind the spec sheet, not just the numbers? Read our deep manufacturer reviews.

How to Use This Comparison
Figure out what you actually need first. A house, an HOA common area, and a city park all want different sizes and price points — that's what decides which rows matter to you.
Then narrow it down by size and type. Every number below came straight off the government's official list — we didn't estimate or round anything.

Best Picks at a Glance
Four real standouts, picked for a specific reason a homeowner, HOA, or municipality would actually care about — not a made-up 1-to-10 score. Every reason below traces back to a real, checkable fact: certified size range, product-line breadth, or procurement type.

32–96 gal across 5 certified models
In plain terms: whatever your household actually needs — a small 32-gallon can for one or two people, or a 96-gallon cart for a big family with infrequent pickup — Toter almost certainly makes a certified size that fits, without you rounding up to something bigger (and pricier) than you need.

Certified carts, enclosures, and dumpsters — the only manufacturer to cover all three
Why that matters: most manufacturers make just one type of product. If you need a home trash cart today and might add an enclosure or shared dumpster later (a growing family, an HOA project), buying from a manufacturer that certifies all three means one company, one point of contact, and consistent build quality across your whole property.

197 gal — the largest certified unit in our database
In plain terms: if you're consolidating two smaller cans into one, hosting a big household, or serving a small multi-family building, this is the single biggest certified container we've verified — no need to run two carts side by side just for capacity.

A state correctional-industries program — a distinct procurement channel
Why that matters for municipal buyers: state correctional-industries programs often qualify for sole-source or cooperative-purchasing rules that a private vendor doesn't — worth checking with your procurement office before you put a project out to bid.

Also currently on Yosemite National Park's own approved-container list despite unconfirmed IGBC status — see the Garcia entry above for what "unconfirmed" actually means.

Latch updated 5/2020; same certification number.

Made by I.C. Refrigeration Service, Inc., a family-owned HVAC, refrigeration, and custom sheet-metal fabrication company operating in Ceres, California since 1940. The Bear Stop line is a division of that existing shop rather than a dedicated bear-box startup — units are 14-gauge sheet steel with a weatherproof coating.

Certification date not printed on the source list for this model; number is verified.

One of very few products on our entire site carrying three separate certifications on one unit.

One of 9 certified Capital Industries dumpster SKUs (2-8 yard, front/rear-load) on the source list — representative entry, not the full range.

Citibin was founded in 2012 by Liz Picarazzi, who began prototyping trash enclosures in her Brooklyn backyard to solve a rat problem, not a bear problem. The standard product is an above-ground modular steel/aluminum enclosure; this bear-resistant version swaps in steel panels and a paddle-latch, piano-hinge door system.

State correctional-industries manufacturer — common for municipal procurement. One of 15 certified SKUs (dumpsters + carts) on the source list.

Duck River Services makes a steel garbage-can enclosure (housing for existing trash cans, not a dumpster) under the brand Duck River GCE, based in Columbia, Tennessee. The company designs, fabricates, powder-coats, and installs its enclosures in-house.
"Unconfirmed" on IGBC's list doesn't mean discontinued or invalid — this model still appears on Yosemite National Park's own current list of approved food-storage containers, confirmed directly against nps.gov. Garcia Machine has no active website of its own (their listed domain resolves to a blank placeholder page) — it's sold only through outdoor retailers like REI and Campmor, which is also why no manufacturer photo or logo appears here.
No verifiable web presence — only this phone number (a Montana line) appears in any record we could find, including IGBC's own official listing, which lists no website for them either. We could not confirm the company's location, size, or history beyond the certified product itself.

Grizzly Fabrication & Welding is a general custom metal-fabrication and welding shop in Park County, Wyoming, near Yellowstone — their broader work includes handrails, flatbeds, and fencing. Bear-resistant products, certified since 2009, are one of several product lines they've maintained long-term, not their sole business.

One of 11 certified Haul-All SKUs on the source list — representative entry, not the full range.

Jamestown's other certified SKUs on the source list are food-storage lockers, out of scope for Bear Proof Guide's trash/dumpster focus.

"Kodiak" — a brand name that also shows up directly in Bear Proof Guide's own keyword research as a searched product name.

Also carries a separate WMI/SEAFWA black-bear certification on the same model.

RJ Thomas operates under the Pilot Rock brand (pilotrock.com). Their other certified SKUs on the source list are food-storage lockers, out of scope for Bear Proof Guide's trash/dumpster focus.

The only RTIC model we could verify any IGBC certification for — real and dated, but on IGBC's unconfirmed list, meaning RTIC hasn't completed annual re-verification. Don't assume this extends to RTIC's broader cooler lineup.

Shares a phone number with TuffBoxx in the source list — likely a shared distributor relationship, not verified further.

Compatible with municipal fully-automated collection trucks. Also carries a separate WMI/SEAFWA black-bear certification on the same model.

Most recently certified product in our database as of this data pull.
IGBC lists this under "Food Storage Bag" and notes it was previously the S29 AllWhite. Soft-sided bag, not a hard canister.

Genuinely unresolved: this is a separate IGBC line item from "Tundra Cooler 45" (different certification number), and IGBC's own list gives no indication it's discontinued or superseded. We could not confirm whether it's a distinct product or an older/administrative listing for what's now sold as the Tundra 45 — YETI has no other public 45-quart line. Treat the photo above as illustrative of YETI's general hard-cooler design, not a confirmed match for this specific certification. Also requires YETI's own added bear-resistant lock, like every cooler on IGBC's list.

How to Choose the Right One
Does your waste hauler require a specific cart size or automated-collection compatibility? That rules out manufacturers before anything else matters.
Every manufacturer here has at least one real certification number, from the IGBC or WMI/SEAFWA — click through to confirm it covers the exact model and capacity you need.
Latch behavior, automation, cart size, and whether guests can use it correctly — see our STR guide if usability under real-world (non-expert) use is your top concern.
How We Compare Products
This comparison intentionally separates verified facts from editorial judgment. Certification, capacity, and compatibility come from source data. "Best for" labels are our plain-language read of that data, not a hidden point system.
- ✓ Verified source data — every cert number checked against the official IGBC or WMI/SEAFWA list
- ✓ No paid rankings — no manufacturer pays for placement or a better position
- ✓ Clear affiliate disclosure — see our methodology
- ✓ Updated product database, re-checked against the source list
