Bear-Resistant Certification, Explained
"Bear-resistant" isn't a regulated word — anyone can print it on a label. Real certification means a product passed a live-bear test administered by one of two actual programs: the IGBC (grizzly bears) and WMI/SEAFWA (black bears). This page explains both, then gives you every certified product we track from either one — hand-verified against the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee's official list and WMI/SEAFWA's, never an estimated price or an assumed spec.
What Is the IGBC, in Plain English?
The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) is a real U.S. government body — wildlife agencies from federal, state, and tribal governments working together on grizzly bear recovery. One of the things they do is run a testing program for trash cans, dumpsters, and food-storage containers. If a product passes, it earns an official IGBC certification number. Nobody pays to have their marketing call something "bear-proof" — a product either has a real cert number from this program or it doesn't, and we show you which is which.
How Certification Actually Works
This isn't a paperwork stamp. Manufacturers send a sample of the product to a certified testing facility, where live grizzly bears — animals that already know how to break into things — are given 60 uninterrupted minutes to get inside it, with food as the incentive. If the bear can't get in and can't destroy the container trying, the product passes. If it fails, the manufacturer has to redesign it and test again. That live trial is why an IGBC certification number is a meaningfully different claim than a bag that just says "animal-resistant" on the label with no test behind it.
If You're a Homeowner
You don't need to become an expert in the certification program — you just need the cert number to exist. Before buying anything marketed as bear-proof, check it against this database (or ask the seller for the IGBC certification number directly). If they can't give you one, assume it's untested. A determined bear can destroy an untested container in minutes, which usually costs more in replacement and cleanup than the certified version would have in the first place.
If You're an HOA, Park, or Municipality
Many local bear ordinances (see the ones we've verified in our state-by-state law guide) specifically require "IGBC-rated" or "IGBC-certified" containers — not just anything labeled bear-resistant. Buying off this database, and keeping the cert number on file, is how you show compliance if a resident or inspector ever asks. It also protects you from a common problem: a vendor selling a cheaper, uncertified container under bear-resistant marketing language that wouldn't actually satisfy the ordinance.
If You're Comparing Manufacturers
Certification is pass/fail, not a ranking — it doesn't tell you which certified product is best for your situation, only that a given product cleared the same bar. Use the certification number to rule products in or out, then compare the certified options on capacity, price, automation compatibility, and manufacturer support with our Product Finder or the manufacturer pages linked from each row below.
Is IGBC the Only Real Certification?
No — and it's worth understanding the difference so you don't mistake one for the other. There are two real, separately-administered bear-resistant testing programs in North America:
- IGBC (this database) — tests against live grizzly bears at one of two approved facilities. The current confirmed list (October 22, 2026) has roughly 200 products from about 40 manufacturers are on the current list.
- WMI/SEAFWA Black Bear-Resistant Product Testing — a separate program run by the Wildlife Management Institute in partnership with the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, testing against live black bears. It's real and just as rigorous — it's simply a different list, for a different (smaller) species. See the certified locks and covers we found under this program.
Both programs are coordinated by overlapping staff at the Living with Wildlife Foundation (LWWF) — a real Montana-based nonprofit that administers the IGBC's testing program directly. LWWF is not itself a separate certifying brand a product can carry instead of IGBC or WMI/SEAFWA certification — if a manufacturer says a product is "LWWF tested," the actual, checkable outcome is whichever of the two official lists above the product does or doesn't appear on.
One more nuance: IGBC actually publishes two lists — the main confirmed list (what this database is built from) and a separate "not confirmed by manufacturer" list for products whose maker hasn't completed that year's availability check-in. Critically, IGBC states products on that second list still carry real certification — they're just administratively unconfirmed as currently purchasable. We check both current lists before publishing a "not certified" conclusion about any brand.
Can't Find a Brand You're Looking For?
Some well-known "bear-resistant" brands don't currently appear on the IGBC's official list — that's worth knowing before you buy one assuming it's certified. See other bear-resistant brands we've checked for what we could and couldn't verify about them.
