An enclosure secures a cart you already own (or a new one) inside a bear-resistant frame — often the right call for HOAs and communities that want a consistent look across multiple properties, since it standardizes appearance without forcing everyone onto the same cart brand.
What "IGBC Certified" Actually Means
The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee is a real U.S. government body — wildlife agencies from federal, state, and tribal governments working together on grizzly bear recovery. Their testing program is straightforward but strict: a live grizzly bear gets 60 uninterrupted minutes with a sample enclosure, food inside as the incentive. If the bear can't get in and can't destroy it trying, the enclosure passes and earns a real certification number. If it fails, the manufacturer redesigns and re-tests. Nobody buys their way onto this list.
How to Use the Certification Number
Every certified number and date below was read directly off the IGBC's own published list — not estimated from a marketing claim. Cross-check any quote you receive against our full certified-products database before you buy, especially if your area has a bear ordinance that requires certification specifically — see our state-by-state law guide.
Bear-Proof Garbage Can Enclosures, Sheds & Boxes: What to Call Them
A bear-proof trash can enclosure is a structure that houses the cart you already own so a bear can't reach it. You will also see them sold as bear-proof garbage can enclosures, bear-resistant garbage can enclosures, bear-proof garbage enclosures, or a bear-proof trash shed or garbage shed. They are not the same as the screened pad around a commercial dumpster that people call a trash enclosure: the certified units on this page passed a live-bear test.
If you would rather replace the can, compare certified bear-proof trash cans. If you only need to secure the can you have, a certified lock may be enough.
What to Check Before You Buy
Single-cart and multi-cart (2-module+) enclosures aren't interchangeable — measure your actual cart count and dimensions before ordering, since a too-small enclosure defeats the purpose if a can gets left outside it.
Wood-look composite enclosures blend into a residential HOA aesthetic; powder-coated steel holds up better to heavy snow load and UV in full-sun climates.
Sliding, hinged, and lift-up access styles trade off ease-of-use against wind resistance — a hinged door in a high-wind area needs a positive latch, not just gravity.
The IGBC certification applies to the enclosure as tested — door, latch, and frame together — not to individual parts sold separately.
